Classroom Cell Phone and Electronic Devices Policy

  1. The student handbook states that cell phones and electronic devices must be turned off and out of sight during the school day. Students are strongly discouraged from bringing cell phones and other electronic devices into the classroom.
  2. In the event that a student brings a cell phone or electronic device to class, s/he will be asked to turn off the device and to deposit it in a specifically marked container for the duration of the period. The student may retrieve the device upon exiting class. If students do not wish to turn in their cell phones during class, they can choose another location to store their phones outside of the classroom; however, please note that lost or stolen property is not the school's responsibility.
  3. In the event that a student chooses not to or fails to deposit the cell phone or electronic device when entering class, the consequences outlined on the class discipline plan will be followed.
  4. The only additions or exceptions to the consequences listed are as follows:
· Because it is impossible to determine a student’s intentions for communicating via cell phone or electronic device during class, especially in a testing situation, any electronic device use during a test or quiz will result in a score of ZERO.
· Should a student refuse to deposit his/her electronic device after a verbal reminder/warning, a phone call home will be made and a referral written to the principal’s office.

Every effort is made to ensure student success. Cell phones and electronic devices have become a distraction and a detriment to learning in certain learning environments. At times, cell phones can be used to augment the learning process, and in these instances, the teacher will give verbal/written consent and then and only then, may students use their electronic devices to achieve that end.
